Age Calculator

The standard way to express age is the count of completed calendar years between your birth date and today. We start with the difference in year, then adjust down by one if the current month-day is earlier in the year than your birth month-day. After the year is fixed, we count the remaining months and days separately so the result reads as 'X years, Y months, Z days' the way you would say it out loud.

Total days, hours, minutes, and seconds are computed from the raw millisecond difference between midnight on your birth date (local time) and the current instant. Leap years and daylight saving time are handled by the browser's built-in Date math, so you do not need to think about February 29 or spring-forward edge cases.

Most of the world uses 'completed years' (the convention this calculator follows). A few cultures count differently. Korean age, for example, adds one year at birth and another every January 1, so a Korean newborn born on December 31 turns 'two' the next day. South Korea formally switched to the international system in 2023 for legal purposes, but the traditional count still appears in everyday conversation.

Insurance underwriters sometimes use 'age nearest birthday' — if you are within six months of your next birthday, they price you as if you were already that age. This is why a life-insurance quote can list an age one year higher than your driver's license. Tax filings, passports, and school enrollment use completed years.

Milestone planning. The exact-day countdown to your next birthday is handy for parties, anniversaries, and round-number birthdays (10,000 days alive lands shortly after your 27th birthday).

Eligibility checks. Many programs trigger at the day, not the year — Medicare at exactly 65, Social Security early retirement at 62 and zero days, age-banded life-insurance brackets at the birthday itself.

Pet and child development. Pediatricians track growth in months for the first two years, then in years afterward. Veterinarians track dog and cat age in months for the first 12 months and use breed-specific multipliers after that — our Dog Age Calculator handles the species-specific math.

Forensic and demographic work. Decedent age, life-expectancy tables, and actuarial pricing all rely on completed days, not rounded years, so an exact age is the input format these calculations expect.

The calculator interprets your date of birth in your browser's local time zone. If you were born in Sydney and now live in Los Angeles, the day boundary can shift — being born at 23:30 on March 14 in Sydney is 06:30 on March 14 UTC, which is March 13 in California. Most identity documents record the birth date in the time zone of the place of birth, so if those two records disagree by one day, the time-zone offset is almost always why.

Daylight saving transitions add or subtract one hour to your 'total hours alive' but never affect the year/month/day breakdown, because DST shifts wall-clock time, not actual elapsed time. Leap seconds (the occasional one-second correction to civil time announced by the International Earth Rotation Service) are also ignored by browser Date math, so the 'total seconds' figure can be off by 20-30 seconds for people born before 1972. Nobody noticed before this paragraph and nobody will after.

Driving. Learner's permit eligibility ranges from 14 (South Dakota) to 16 (Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey). Full unrestricted license is 18 in most states.

Voting. 18 nationwide, set by the 26th Amendment in 1971.

Drinking. 21 nationwide since 1984. Some states allow under-21 consumption on private property with parental consent — check local rules before assuming.

Car rental. Most major rental agencies serve drivers 25 and older without surcharge; under-25 drivers pay $15-$30 per day in 'young driver' fees, and a few brands will not rent to drivers under 21 at all.

Retirement and benefits. Social Security early retirement at 62, full retirement age 66-67 depending on birth year, delayed retirement credit until 70. Medicare eligibility at exactly 65. Tax-advantaged retirement account catch-up contributions begin at 50. Required minimum distributions from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s begin at 73 under SECURE 2.0.

Insurance pricing. Auto premiums fall sharply at 25 and again at 30. Life insurance underwriting brackets typically shift at every 5 years (40, 45, 50, etc.), and quoted rates can jump 15-25% the day you cross the threshold — a reason to lock in coverage a few months before a milestone birthday rather than after.
