The old '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule is wrong. Dogs age fastest in their first two years, then slow down — and bigger breeds age faster than smaller ones. This calculator gives you a much more accurate human-equivalent age.
How to use the dog age calculator
1. Enter your dog's age in years (use decimals for puppies — e.g. 0.5 for a 6-month-old).
2. Pick the breed size that matches your dog's adult weight: Small (under 20 lb / 9 kg), Medium (20–50 lb / 9–23 kg), Large (50–90 lb / 23–41 kg), or Giant (over 90 lb / 41 kg).
3. Choose a method: AVMA size-aware (recommended for most dogs) or the 2019 epigenetic clock (a Labrador-based DNA-methylation formula).
4. Read the human-equivalent age plus the life-stage label (Puppy, Junior, Adult, Mature, Senior, or Geriatric).
The formulas behind the calculator
AVMA size-aware: 15 human years in year one, +9 in year two, then +4 (small), +5 (medium), +6 (large), or +7 (giant) per dog year after that.
Epigenetic (Wang et al., 2019): human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31. Derived from DNA methylation in Labrador Retrievers, so it ignores breed size and works best for medium/large dogs.
Life stages are accelerated by breed size — a Great Dane reaches Senior years earlier than a Chihuahua, even at the same chronological age.

Frequently asked questions
Is the '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule accurate?
No. Dogs reach the equivalent of about 15 human years by their first birthday and about 24 by their second. After that, aging slows and depends heavily on size — small breeds age about 4 human years per dog year, while giant breeds age about 7. The flat 7× rule overestimates puppy aging and underestimates aging in large breeds.
What is the AVMA size-aware method?
The American Veterinary Medical Association uses a size-aware curve: 15 human years in year one, +9 in year two, then a per-year amount based on breed size (4 for small, 5 medium, 6 large, 7 giant). It is the most widely cited practical formula and the default for this calculator.
What is the 2019 epigenetic dog-age formula?
A 2019 study by Wang et al. analyzed DNA methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers and derived: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It is based on Labradors specifically and ignores breed size, so use it as a second opinion alongside the AVMA result rather than a definitive answer.
Why do bigger dogs age faster than small dogs?
Larger breeds reach skeletal maturity faster but also experience faster cellular aging and shorter lifespans — the opposite of what is true across species. The exact mechanism is still being researched (growth-hormone load and oxidative stress are leading hypotheses), but it is why a 10-year-old Great Dane is treated as geriatric while a 10-year-old Chihuahua is just middle-aged.
How do I figure out my dog's age in months for the calculator?
Divide months by 12 and enter the decimal — a 6-month-old puppy is 0.5, a 9-month-old is 0.75. The size-aware AVMA curve handles fractional ages correctly throughout the puppy and junior stages.
What size category does my dog fit into?
Use adult weight, not current weight: Small is under 20 lb (9 kg) — Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Yorkie. Medium is 20–50 lb (9–23 kg) — Beagle, Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel. Large is 50–90 lb (23–41 kg) — Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd. Giant is over 90 lb (41 kg) — Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard.
When is a dog considered a senior?
It depends on size. Small breeds enter senior life around 10–11 years, medium breeds around 8–9, large breeds around 7–8, and giant breeds around 6 years. The calculator's life-stage label adjusts automatically based on the size you pick.
Can mixed-breed dogs use this calculator?
Yes. Pick the size category that matches your dog's adult weight — for mixed breeds, weight is a more reliable predictor of aging rate than guessed parentage.
